BIRMINGHAM ASSAY OFFICES

Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham | Commercial Workplace | Interior Design Proposal

Shropshire Studios Ltd is delighted to present this interior design proposal for the transformation of several key spaces within the historic Birmingham Assay Office, located in the Jewellery Quarter. The project reimagines the building as a series of functional, flexible and highly leasable co‑working office environments, designed to honour the Assay Office’s heritage while appealing to contemporary businesses.

The proposal balances historic character with soft, modern workplace design — creating inspiring, efficient spaces that support productivity, collaboration and long‑term occupancy.

The brief was to create a series of flexible co‑working spaces that maximise occupancy while maintaining comfort, usability and strong visual identity. Cost efficiency, adaptability and long‑term performance were key considerations throughout the design strategy.

THE BRIEF

  • Maximising occupancy through efficient space planning

  • Industrial character softened with warm, modern finishes

  • Flexible co‑working environments for multiple tenant types

  • Biophilic design to enhance wellbeing

  • Acoustic performance for privacy and productivity

Honouring the Assay Office’s Legacy

Subtle references to the building’s industrial past are woven throughout the design through material choices, texture, and curated detailing — celebrating the heritage of the Assay Office without feeling pastiche.

Industrial Charm with Soft Modern Aesthetics

Exposed elements, concrete, grey and brick tones form the foundation of the palette, layered with softer textures and contemporary finishes. Accents of orange and teal introduce contrast and energy, helping to modernise the industrial aesthetic.
