THE DEN

STUDENT STUDY SPACE

Wolverhampton | Education & Community | Interior Design Project

Shropshire Interior Design Studio was appointed to reimagine The Den at University of Wolverhampton — creating a contemporary student gathering space that moves beyond the traditional campus environment.

The project delivers a fusion of rustic charm and contemporary vibrancy, blending warmth, texture and comfort with a bold, modern edge. Designed as a multifunctional social hub, The Den offers students a place to relax, socialise and study in an environment inspired by the atmosphere of a modern coffee shop.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design concept centres on blending rustic warmth with modern industrial aesthetics. Natural textures and warm finishes are layered with contemporary details to create a space that feels relaxed, dynamic and welcoming.

Inspired by café culture, the layout encourages students to linger — whether working independently, meeting friends or simply taking time out between lectures. The result is a space that feels familiar, comfortable and distinctly social.

The University required a space that would encourage student engagement, foster a sense of community and support a variety of activities throughout the day.

Key objectives included:

  • Creating an inviting, non‑institutional environment

  • Supporting socialising, studying and downtime

  • Introducing a sense of fun and interaction

  • Delivering a space that feels contemporary yet warm

The space needed to appeal to a diverse student audience while remaining durable and functional for daily use.

THE BRIEF

KEY FEATURES

The space is zoned to support different behaviours, allowing students to move easily between quiet study, casual meetings and social interaction.

Games & Interactive Elements
An element of play was introduced through board games and video gaming areas, encouraging students to unwind, connect and engage with one another beyond academic activity.

Comfort‑Led Furniture & Finishes
Plush furnishings, sumptuous fabrics and carefully selected décor elements create a sense of comfort and understated luxury, elevating the overall experience while remaining robust and practical.

Coffee‑Shop Atmosphere
The look and feel draw heavily from contemporary café design — warm lighting, layered textures and informal seating layouts that make the space feel relaxed and approachable rather than institutional.
