Shropshire Studios was appointed to redesign a landmark 72,000 sq ft headquarters in Solihull, transforming Portland House into a future‑ready workplace that blends industrial architecture with elevated hospitality design.

The project reimagines the entire building — from arrival experience to executive floors — creating a people‑first environment that supports collaboration, wellbeing and modern ways of working.

The client required a headquarters that felt modern, aspirational and aligned with their brand, while supporting a flexible, agile workforce. The design needed to improve staff experience, encourage collaboration and elevate the perception of the building for both employees and visitors.

The entrance was designed as a bold, hospitality‑led statement.

Key features include:

  • 10ft holographic water feature wall with Venetian marble backdrop

  • Custom AV welcome wall

  • Bespoke reception desk in soft travertine tones

  • Touchless turnstile access

  • Panelled Venetian plaster walls

  • Curated waiting lounge with sculptural seating

GROUND FLOOR ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE

DESIGN FOCUS

Agile breakout spaces were introduced throughout the building to support informal meetings, focused work and social interaction.

    • Zone‑specific acoustic carpet tiles

    • High‑back modular booth seating

    • Carbon‑negative and FSC‑certified materials

    • Hospitality‑style booths, sofas and café tables

The Sky Lounge acts as a retreat above the city, offering panoramic views across Resorts World, Birmingham Airport and the NEC.

  • Central olive tree with circular seating

  • Hospitality‑inspired kitchen and bar

  • Wellness retreat zone

  • Games and social areas

  • Layered planting and timber ceiling slats

SKY LOUNGE

CONFERENCE ROOMS

A multifunctional space designed for leadership meetings, collaboration and training.

Design details:

  • Modular flip‑top boardroom tables

  • Bespoke joinery and media wall

  • Upholstered task seating

  • Acoustic carpet with organic patterning

  • Statement circular pendant lighting


Designed as a premium, multifunctional executive environment, the President Suite at Portland House delivers a refined balance of privacy, flexibility and hospitality‑level finish. This suite was conceived to support leadership working styles, high‑level decision‑making and client engagement — all within a discreet, highly considered setting.

PRESIDENT SUITE

PRIVATE OFFICES

A series of private meeting rooms provide optimised environments for different styles of interaction — from informal discussions to formal board‑level meetings.

Design considerations include:

  • Multiple room typologies offering informal, semi‑formal and formal settings

  • Advanced AV and presentation technology

  • Acoustic materials to ensure privacy and sound control

  • Flexible furniture layouts to suit meetings, workshops or one‑to‑one discussions

  • Integrated room booking systems for seamless operation

Each room was designed to support clarity, focus and productive conversation.

The executive offices within the President Suite combine focused workspaces with integrated meeting areas, supporting modern leadership and flexible working.

Design features include:

  • Bespoke desks and storage with concealed cable management

  • Meeting spaces integrated within private offices

  • Flexible furniture solutions — from boardroom tables to dining‑style tables

  • Acoustic finishes to enhance concentration and privacy

  • Window‑wall desks with optimised daylight and views

  • Shading solutions for comfort and light control

  • Ergonomically designed workstations to support long working hours

  • Integrated technology to support hybrid and digital working

These spaces allow executives to move seamlessly between focused work, collaboration and hosting — without leaving the suite.

EXECUTIVE OFFICES

WC’S

The washrooms at Portland House HQ have been reimagined as refined, hotel‑inspired spaces that balance everyday functionality with elevated design, reinforcing the overall quality and experience of the workplace.

Design features include:

  • Large‑format stone floor and wall tiles for a clean, expansive feel

  • Fluted marble feature detailing to add texture and visual interest

  • Full‑height mirrored walls to enhance light and spatial perception

  • Central Venetian plaster island basin topped with Calacatta quartz

  • Integrated base‑mounted hand‑dryer taps for a seamless, uncluttered finish

  • Bespoke suspended LED mirror providing soft, flattering illumination

  • Hanging planters introducing a subtle biophilic element

  • A dedicated vanity station with stools, offering space to reset during the working day

  • Warm material palette combining blush marble, beige tones, brushed gold accents and Swiss elm wood finishes

These spaces elevate a traditionally overlooked area into a considered, premium environment that supports wellbeing, comfort and the overall workplace experience.
